The Ibero-American Univesities Union (UIU) is organizing -from the 10th to the 14th of July- the course Smart cities: innovación, cambio climático, planificación urbana, gobernanza y participación creativa (innovation, climate change, urban planning, governance and creative participation), which is part of the course offering of the UB International Summer School. This course, coordinated by the lecturers of the Faculty of Economics and Business of the University of Barcelona Elisabet Viladecans and Elisenda Paluzie, is the first educational activity organized in the UB by UIU, an alliance formed by the University of Barcelona, University of Buenos Aires, the Complutense University of Madrid, the National Autonomous University of Mexico and the University of São Paulo. In this course, with a multidisciplinary program covering the problems and solutions for the cities of the future, twenty students -out of the thirty who registered for the course- come from Latin American universities members of the UIU.

The teaching staff, coming from five UIU universities, covers diverse fields such as architecture, fine arts, economy, engineering or sociology. Lectures will be combined with presentations of study cases on good practices on design and urban policies. The lessons are organized in different blocs: on the impact of innovation in the social development of big cities, smart urban planning, cities and climate change, the role of strategy urban planning in city development, study of successful cases of smart cities, and urban cohesion, governance and creative participation.

UIU, with the support from Santander Bank, forms a nucleus of scientific high quality institutions promoting the recognition of their researchers, lecturers and students, as well as the exchange of students and lecturers, work on joint research projects and teaching, and the development of theses and shared students for dual degrees. Another of its objectives is the dissemination of the Ibero-American culture worldwide with the organization of seminars, colloquiums, and scientific conferences.
