The Catalan Society for Biology Award goes to the young researcher Jesús Lozano
Jesús Lozano Fernàndez, author of the thesis Mecanisme dʼacció de lʼhormona juvenil en la metamorfosi dels insectes, read at the UB in December 2014, has been awarded with the award of the Catalan Society for Biology (SCB) in the category of young researcher. SCB awards, which honor the best researches and projects in the field of biology in Catalan-speaking areas, were given on Monday July 10, in a ceremony held in Sala de Convalescència in Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau of Barcelona within the framework of the Second Night of Biology.

This doctoral study, awarded with the second honorable mention by the XX Premi Claustre de Doctors (20th Doctorsʼ Senate Award) of the University of Barcelona, was led by the researcher Xavier Bellés, from the Institute of Evolutionary Biology (CSIC-UPF) and supervised by the lecturer Miquel Àngel Arnedo, from the Department of Evolutionary Biology, Ecology and Environmental Sciences of the Faculty of Biology and from the Biodiversity Research Institute of the UB (IRBio).
The study reveals how the juvenile hormone acts, one of the reasons this radical morphological change in insects occurs. In the awarded thesis, Lozano Fernàndez, who will join the UB as Juan de la Cierva researcher in Arnedoʼs team, describes in detail the transition from an incomplete metamorphosis -such as in grasshoppersʼ- into a complete metamorphosis with a chrysalis state (in butterflies), a key process to better understand the evolution of the most diverse species group in the animal kingdom.
In addition, the study Lʼembrió inconformista. Com influeix en la nostra evolució el desenvolupament embrionari (Publications and Editions of the UB), by the professors David Bueno and Jordi García-Fernàndez, from the Department of Genetics, Microbiology and Statistics of the UB, has been finalist for the SCB Award in the category of dissemination.
