The new research institute Barcelona Economics Analysis Team (BEAT), formed by thirty-five researchers from different departments of the Faculty of Economics and Business, who are members of consolidated research groups (GRC) by Generalitat de Catalunya, aims to create quality research revolving around three areas: behaviour, markets and games, macroeconomics, development and trade, and environment, sustainability and well-being.

In particular, the founders of the institute belong to the following GRC: Center for Economic Analysis and Social Policy (CAEPS), Center for Research in Welfare Economics (CREB), the research group in Creativity, Innovation and Urban Transformation (CRIT), Economy, Energy and Environmental Pressures (EEEP), Economic History and Development (HDE), Optimization and Dynamic Games in Economics and Finance (ODEF) and Game Theory and Assignment Markets (TJMA).

BEAT is a step further in the natural process of the construction of critical mass in the Faculty of Economics and Business. In this sense, last year, the number of departments in the center was reduced from six to three (Economics, Econometrics, Statistics and Applied Economics, and Economic, Financial and Actuarial Mathematics), apart from a multidisciplinary department (Department of Economic History, Institutions, Policy and World Economy).

The new institute aims to attract postgraduate students with a high level and top talent from around the world, among others. Another key aspect of BEAT will be the reinforcement of the relation between researchers and society, aiming to stand out as a model center for the public and private sectors. In short, this platform wants to contribute to sustain the reputation of international excellence of the University of Barcelona. Within this strategy, the Executive Committee and the directing team of the new institute will receive the advice and evaluation of a group of eight international prestigious experts, expertized in fields included within BEATʼs research areas.

The official presentation ceremony of the institute will take place on October 25, 2017 in Aula Magna in the Historical Building of the University of Barcelona. Alícia Adserà, lecturer and researcher from Princeton University will give the opening speech. The ceremony will include presentations for the research of several members of BEAT, as well as a roundtable on the current challenges in the field of public policies.
