The director of the Institute of Theoretical and Computational Theory and professor from the Department of Materials Science and Physical Chemistry, Francesc Illas, was appointed as new member of the Academia Europeaea in the Chemical Sciences Section.

This Academia is focused on the progress and dissemination of humanities, arts and sciences. It is integrated by several researchers that are invited to be part of it after being nominated by a group of experts who assess the relevance of their research in the corresponding field. Illas is the first researcher of the University of Barcelona to be part of the Academia Europaea in the field of chemistry.

Francesc Illas (Barcelona, 1954) is director of the Institute of Theoretical and Computational Theory of the UB (IQTCUB), in the Faculty of Chemistry. Since 2006, he has been director of the R&D reference network in Theoretical and Computational Chemistry (XRQTEC). His research field is the study of the electric structure of surface and materials using computational methods from the field of quantum chemistry, a field in which he has published more than five-hundred science articles.
