On November 27, the Paranimph of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (Medicine Campus - Hospital Clínic August Pi i Sunyer) will hold the 2017 Ramón y Cajal lecture, to be given by the Nobel Prize in Medicine 2011 Jules Hoffmann, under the title “My scientific story: innate immunity, from flies to humans”.

The event takes place within the framework of the Nobel Prize Inspiration Initiative, a program with the aim of having Nobel Prizes sharing their ideas and personal experiences in universities and research centers worldwide. This aims to be an opportunity for the students, the scientific community and especially young researchers to set a dialogue with the Nobel Prize.

The program for this yearʼs lecture is organized by the Nobel Prize Inspiration Initiative in collaboration with AstraZeneca and AstraZeneca Foundation. Also, it is supported by the University of Barcelona, IDIBAPS and Hospital Clínic de Barcelona.

Jules Hoffmann (1941, Luxembourg) has focused his research career on the study of innate immunity in insects. The work he started led the scientific community to re-evaluate the insectsʼ innate immunity on mammals and humans. Therefore, in 2011, together with Bruce Beutler and Ralph Steinman, Hoffmann was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine and Physiology for his work on the field of immunology, which changed the understanding of the immunity system thanks to the discovery of the fundamental principles to activate it.

Ramón y Cajal Medal

During the ceremony, Professor Hoffman will be awarded the Ramón y Cajal Medal of the Faculty. This award was approved in 1983 with the aim of honouring distinguished researchers who, like Santiago Ramón y Cajal, received the Nobel Prize. Since its creation, the medal has been awarded to ten Nobel Prizes in Medicine and Physiology.

Registration through this link is required in order to attend the ceremony.
