The University of Barcelona obtained, so far, nineteen projects in the framework of the Horizon 2020 project of the European Commission (EC), with a total amount of 37,5 million euros. The UB coordinates twenty out of these projects: eleven of these are European Research Council (ERC) projects given to individual researchers, while the other nine are collaborative. ERC Consolidator Grants

Two researchers from the UB were awarded two ERC Consolidator Grants in the last call. They are Anna Alberni Jordà, ICREA researcher at the Department of Catalan Philology and General Linguistics and member of the Institute for Research on Medieval Cultures (IRCVM), who obtained 1,3 million euros for her project Ioculator seu mimus. Performing music and poetry in medieval Iberia (MiMus); and the researcher Ismael Díez Pérez, from the Department of Materials Science and Physical Chemistry, who got around two million euros for his project Force fields in redox anzymatic catalysis (Fields4CAT).

Horizon 2020 in the 2016-2017 biennium

Regarding the calls for the Horizon 2020 programs during 2016-2017, the University of Barcelona obtained 27 projects, with a total amount of about 13,5 million euros. Also, during this period it added two more ERC projects by researchers coming from other institutions, corresponding to calls from 2015, for an amount of about four million euros. It is remarkable that many 2016-2017 period calls will be settled over the first term in 2018, thus more projects are expected to be obtained. Also, the research staff of the University got other projects within the Horizon 2020 program, through participating research institutes, which did not account for in here.

Regarding specific typologies, the UB has obtained so far twelve ERC projects: three Starting Grants (in one it takes part in as associate partner), four Consolidator Grants, three Advanced Grants and two Proof of Concept grants. Regarding the individual actions Marie-Sklodowska Curie, it got a total of eighteen projects, six of them corresponding to the call in 2016 (the 2017 call is still on pending resolution).

Since Horizon 2020 program started, in 2014, EC has closed more than two-hundred calls with around 2,400 research lines. Recently, the work programmes for 2018-2020 -the last Horizon 2020- were published, and there are now 43 open calls for 244 research lines, and 48 more to be opened, which will include 433 more lines.

The excellent results obtained by the University of Barcelona are divided among the several centers. The center of Physics and Chemistry leads the list of obtained projects, with a total of thirty-two. The center of Biology and Earth Sciences has fifteen projetcs, and Economics and Business has nine. Philosophy and Geography and History have eight projects, Phycology has seven, and Mathematics and Computer Science has six. The centers of Philology, Medicine and Education obtained three projects, and Pharmacy and Food Sciences got two. Both the center of Fine Arts and the Learning and Research Resource Centre (CRAI) got one project.
