Democràcia i plurinacionalitat is an anthology of texts that were spread around, some of which did not have many visibility. There are science articles and press articles, chapters from collective books, prologues, essays, and conferences. The book is divided in four areas: Political Theory: State, nationalisms and pluralist federalism; Catalonia and Spain: reflections and proposal lines; Views on politics, history and memory (a mix of different topics such as the functioning of institutions or public policies on democratic memory), and A future for the public university (Miquel Caminal was vice-rector during the mandate of Josep M. Bricall as rector and was an involved professor in the functioning of the university institution). Regarding the relevance of the texts, the prologue highlights that “During the last years, the debate on the national issue has been at the center of the political agenda. Having a book that eases the access to great part of Miquel Caminalʼs works on this essential issue is a luxury”.

Miquel Caminal graduated in Economic Sciences at the University of Barcelona and received the Extraordinary Doctoral Prize for his thesis Joan Comonera i la revolució democràtica, in 1985. He was professor of Political and Administrative Sciences at the UB and took charge of several responsibilities and management at the University. He was vice-rector for Students (1986-1988) in the team of Josep M. Bricall. Expert on political and contemporary theory, and in particular, in political Catalanism, nationalism and federalism, Caminal contributed to institutionalize political science in Catalonia. He carried out his academic activity at the University of Barcelona, mainly in the faculties of Law and Economics, with a short stay in the Universitat Rovira i Virgili. Among his distinguished works are El federalismo pluralista. Del federalismo nacional al federalismo plurinacional (Paidós, 2002) and Nacionalisme i partits nacionals a Catalunya (Empúries, 1998). He was co-author of several manuals on political science and carried out a dissemination task with articles in the media. Politically committed, he presided the advisory committee for the self-government reform at the Department of Institutional Relations and Participation of Generalitat de Catalunya (2004-2006). From 2008 to 2011, he was the director of the Democratic Memorial of the Generalitat, the first institution of the State which aimed to recover, commemorate and promote democratic memory.
