What are the key factors of La Marató de TV3ʼs success? How are the funded projects chosen in each edition? What does it generate for the benefit of society in return? Why do thousands of people collaborate by making donations every year? La Marató de TV3 as a successful model in research finance is the theme of the masterclass to be held on Thursday, March 15, at 12 noon, in the Aula Magna of the Faculty of Biology.

This masterclass, the first one launched by the University of Barcelona and La Marató de TV3 Foundation, will share among the university community -the elements that make this project an example to follow in the field of solidarity and support to biomedical research. Apart from this session in the Faculty of Biology, two other masterclasses will be given at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences: on March 23 in the Medicine Campus - Hospital Clínic Pi i Sunyer, and on April 25, in the Bellvitge Health Sciences Campus.

Solidarity and research for the benefit of society

The masterclass in the Faculty of Biology, to be presided over by the Rector, Joan Elias, will cover the initiatives of La Marató Foundation as the drivers of the scientific research in Catalonia, with a special focus on the projects of the Faculty of Biology, funded in several calls.

This masterclass will be chaired by the journalist and director of TV3ʼs InfoK, Laia Servera, and the following participants will take part in the activity: Gustavo Llorente, dean of the Faculty of Biology, with the lecture “Per què a la Facultat de Biologia?” (Why at the Faculty of Biology?); Lluís Bernabé, director of La Marató de TV3 Foundation, with the conference “El projecte solidary La Marató de TV3 i Catalunya Ràdio” (The fundraising project La Marató de TV3 and Catalunya Ràdio), and Albert Barberà, coordinator of the Scientific Advisory Committee of the Foundation and director-general of Research and Innovation on Health of the Department of Health, with the lecture “Transparència i rigor en el process de selecció i seguiment dels projectes finançats amb els fons de La Marató” (Transparency and rigor in  the selection process and monitoring of the funded projects by La Marató).
La Marató: women researchers speak

What does it mean to take part in a research project that is funded by La Marató? The lecturer Marta Giralt, from the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biomedicine and member of the Institute of Biomedicine (IBUB), will talk about her experience as the researcher of a project funded by La Marató 2015 ─Identification of molecular mediators of signalling from intestine to insulin sinsitization and the browning of adipose tissue: role of LBP and FGF15/19─ led together with José María Moreno (Hospital Doctor Josep Trueta).

Afterwards, the lecturer Annabel Valledor, from the Department of Cell Biology, Physiology and Immunology, will talk about her research as part of the project Control of systemic and tissue-specific obesity-induced insulin resistance by nuclear receptors, funded in the 2015 edition and led together with the lecturers M. del Carmen Caelles (Faculty of Pharmacy and Food Sciences of the UB) and Mercedes Ricote (CNIC).

The human dimension of a charity project

Within the framework of the masterclass, the participation of the student Àngela Hitos (Faculty of Biology) is noteworthy. She will offer her personal view as participant of La Marató 2009 on Rare Diseases. The activity will finish with a speaking turn-taking open to all the audience. Previous registration via this link is required in order to attend.

La Marató de TV3 is an initiative that mobilises people to support research on different diseases. Since 1992, thanks to peopleʼs donations, it has collected more than 170 million euros, that have funded a total of 794 research projects with more than 7,300 involved researchers in Catalonia. Apart from raising awareness among people and waking up some scientific vocations, La Marató shows the social values that are created by the fundraising project around 250,000 youngsters aged between 12 and 18.

The masterclass can be seen live on UBtv.
