The session to be held on April 25, in Bellvitge Health Sciences Campus, will close the masterclass series by La Marató de TV3 at the University of Barcelona, which started on March 15, with its first session at the Faculty of Biology.

A supporting initiative that mobilises all people

The masterclass, chaired by the journalist Xavier Graset, director and news presenter of TV3ʼs Més 324, will focus a great part of its content on the projects of the Faculty that were funded in several calls of La Marató. The director of La Marató de TV3 foundation, Lluís Bernabé, will take part in the activity with the conference “El projecte solidari La Marató de TV3 i Catalunya Ràdio”. Marga Nadal, director of Strategy in the August Pi i Sunyer Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBAPS), scientific advisor of the Foundation and researcher with a project funded by La Marató, will comment on the transparency and rigor requirements of the selection process and monitoring of the funded projects by this call.

Scientific perspective: what does it mean to take part in one of La Maratóʼs projects?

What does it mean for a researcher to launch a project thanks to the efforts of those who make donations in La Marató, the first fundraising initiative of the country? To answer this question, the lecturer Amanda Jiménez, from the Department of Medicine of the UB, will talk about her experience as a researcher of a project funded by La Marató 2015, titled “Pre-clinical Alzheimerʼs disease and type 2 diabetes and obesity. Effects of bariatric surgery: a multimodal study”, led with Rafael Blesa (Research Institute of Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau, IRHSP).

La Maratóʼs view on research will also have the participation of Rosa Calvo, researcher at Hospital Clínic of Barcelona, who led the project “Cognitive processes in children and adolescents with hf-autism spectrum disorder and their siblings: a neuropsychological and fMRI study”, from the 2008 edition.

First person: the patientʼs perspective

Jordi Fernández, a patient affected by a rare blue disease, will share his personal experience of La Marató 2014, an edition that was dedicated to heart diseases. The activity will close with a speaking turn for the audience.
La Marató de TV3 is an initiative that raises awareness among people to support research on several diseases. Since 1992, thanks to the donations, it has collected more than 170 million euros that funded a total of 794 research projects and involved more than 7,300 researchers in Catalonia. Apart from raising awareness among people and create interest and scientific vocations, La Marató shows the social values that are generated by this fundraising project to 250,000 youngsters aged between 12 and 18.

The masterclass can be seen live in UBtv.
