For its fifth year in a row, the University of Barcelona has joined the “Recicla Cultura” campaign, an initiative from Fundació Servei Solidari that promotes book donation so that other people can buy them for a symbolic price during Saint Georgeʼs Day. The money is used to fund literacy and language courses, carried out by this entity for more than ten years and which help newcomers in Catalonia with their social integration. Last year, the University recycled 489 books within this campaign, and collected 1,180 euros, which helped 28 people to receive a literacy grant.

In Catalonia, almost 25 % of foreign people do not speak Catalan or Spanish as their common language. A good sociolinguistic welcome is the first step into social integration. To raise awareness on this need, Servei Solidari is carrying out this campaign, with the motto “On Saint Georgeʼs Day your book can be part of a great story”. All members of the university community who want to collaborate, can do so until April 13. The books they give have to be well-kept, and have to be left in the CRAI libraries. Class-books or encyclopaedias are not accepted. Childrenʼs books, comics, classics and modern novels are the best options for this activity.

Later, the collected books will be sold in the stands the University will put on the occasion of Saint Georgeʼs Day on April 18 and 19 in five centers: Philology CRAI Library; Philosophy, History and Geography CRAI Library; Law CRAI Library; Bellvitge Campus CRAI Library, and Mundet Campus CRAI Library. Books can be obtained with a donation. All the money will be given to Servei Solidari Foundation to fund literacy and language courses -organized by this entity, which helps around 2,000 people at risk of social exclusion every year.

The “Recicla Cultura” campaign at the University of Barcelona is organized by Voluntariat UB in collaboration with CRAI. Those interested in being volunteers can send an email to voluntariat@ub.edu.
