The August Pi i Sunyer Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBAPS) was founded in 1993. It is a research centre formed by the Ministry of Innovation, Universities and Enterprise (DIUE) of the Catalan Government (Generalitat de Catalunya), the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Barcelona, the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona and the Institute of Biomedical Research of Barcelona of the Spanish National Research Council (IIBB-CSIC).
In the spirit of collaboration, IDIBAPS participates in projects such as the BioRegion of Catalonia (BioCat). Due to such initiatives, Catalonia and Barcelona are becoming important centres for biomedicine.
IDIBAPS is also highly involved in the development of Networking Biomedical Research Centers (CIBERs) and the Thematic Networks of Cooperative Research (RETICs), which are funded by Ministry of Health and Social Policy and the Ministry of Innovation and Science. Its researchers participate in many of these research networks and coordinate two CIBERs, one on hepatic and digestive diseases (CIBERehd) and the other on diabetes and associated metabolic diseases (CIBERdem), as well as the RETIC on AIDS (RIS).
The main aim of IDIBAPS is to combine quality clinical research with high level basic research. This helps to effectively transfer scientific breakthroughs in the prevention and treatment of the most common health problems in Spain.
