In order to bolster R&D activity and improve the quality of public- and private-sector innovation in technology, the University of Barcelona Group (UB Group) conducts a number of projects promoting knowledge and technology transfer in basic research between the UB and private and public businesses and institutions. The UB Group hereby ensures that such institutions can play an instrumental role in technological innovation and fully develop the potential of the quaternary sector.

The UB Group actively participates in the EU's research, development and innovation policies in the framework of the new European Research Area. The UB Group's agencies, which include the Bosch i Gimpera Foundation, the Patents Centre, the Science and Technology Centres, and the Barcelona Science Park, share the following objectives: 

• to intensify participation between university researchers and researchers in private companies;
• to promote new ties between the public and private sectors;
• to facilitate the creation of high-level technology platforms favouring basic research and technological innovation in companies;
• to develop procedures to support the creation of technology-based companies and spin-offs.
