Ciril Rozman

Doctor specializing in internal medicine and hematology

Ciril Rozman (Ljubljana, Slovenia, 1929), professor emeritus of the UB, is an international leader in bone marrow transplants and the fight against chronic lymphocytic leukemia. He came to Barcelona in April 1948 at the age of fifteen after fleeing his native country, which had been occupied by Soviet troops at the end of the Second World War.

He was a student of two leading lights in Catatlan medicine: Agustí Pedro Pons, the founder of the Catalan School of Medicine, and Pere Farreras Valentí, the creator of the Hematology School of Barcelona. In 1976, he led the first allogeneic bone marrow transplant in Spain. His awards and honours include: Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Hematopoietic Progenitor Transplantation of the Generalitat of Catalonia (1994), Narcís Monturiol Medal (1986), Josep Trueta Medal (1997), Cross of Sant Jordi (1990), King Jaume I Award in Clinical Medicine from the Generalitat of Valencia (1995), honorary doctorates from the Universities of Granada (1997) and Salamanca (2004), and ambassador of the Republic of Slovenia for Science (1996). He has brought international renown to the Farreras Valentí School of Hematology.
