By the 12th century, Barcelona has public and private schools that cover the city’s main educational needs: they train physicians and lawyers, and teach mathematics, astronomy, French, and heraldry.

Soon, however, the debate emerges about the creation of a university of its own, one that integrates all higher studies of the city under a single institution.
