In the 19th century, Barcelona is an industrial and dynamic city with a population of 100,000. Modern and restless, the city considers where to locate the university.

In 1838, the faculties are provisionally installed in the Convent del Carme, in the Raval. But the building, damaged by the 1835 riots and the disentailment, is in ruins and does not provide a lasting solution.
