In the middle of the progressive period, on August 10, 1842, Baldomero Espartero signed a Royal Decree that made the transfer of the University of Barcelona definitive. Good news, without a doubt. But at the university it's not all roses and violets…
At first glance, the Convent del Carme might seem like the perfect location: It is spacious and located near the Hospital de la Santa Creu, where Medicine and Surgery studies are taught. The problem is that the building is held up with clamps. In 1853, warnings were issued about the danger posed by bent beams. And the janitor complains: “after a season of abundant rains, it has become necessary to place pots to collect the water from the leaks”. However, no one is prepared for the events of April 5th: During construction work, a vault collapses, a worker dies and four others are injured. The accident causes a great impact. A new and safe building is needed.
