At the beginning of the 20th century, catalanism demands a modern university, in catalan, with autonomy and free from the influence of the Church and political power. The university is regarded as a cultural engine for the country.

The dictatorship of Primo de Rivera halts progress, but the Second Republic opens a period of optimism. Nevertheless, detractors of catalanism persist and the Civil War brings the darkest of days.
