How does music shape the brain, emotions, and creativity? Jordi Costa, psychologist and neuroscientist at the University of Barcelona, Sant Joan de Déu Hospital, and member of the Brainlab research group, takes center stage in the premiere episode of La Gran Orquestra, a new video podcast that bridges art, science, and health.
Launched on October 20 and available on Spotify, YouTube, iVoox, and Apple Podcasts, La Gran Orquestra invites listeners to explore how music can dissolve the boundaries between disciplines, offering new insights into health, research, and the human experience.
In the first episode, titled Music in the brain, Jordi Costa guides audiences through the fascinating processes that occur when the brain perceives and interprets sound. Drawing from neuroscience and psychology, he explains how melodies can evoke emotion, trigger memories, and even support therapeutic practices.
Created with support from the Catalan Foundation for Research and Innovation (FCRI) and the Catalan Institute for Cultural Companies (ICEC), the project connects professionals from research, healthcare, and the arts. Future episodes will delve into themes such as the science of grief, art therapy, creativity in healthcare, and the transformative potential of music.
The episode also features musician and producer Marc Navarro, who presents Sons Germans, a moving musical co-creation project with the siblings of children receiving palliative care. Through music, Navarro creates a space for connection, expression, and emotional healing.
With La Gran Orquestra, Jordi Costa and his collaborators invite us to listen to music not only as art but as a scientific and emotional experience — one that reveals the intricate harmony between brain, emotion, and creativity.
