Abstract
Imagining what the future holds is a daily occurrence for most of us, so much so that we tend to share our expectations of what is to come with those near us. The current work examines how sharing information about our projections to the future with others can shape these same projections, how the process of collaboratively imagining the future interact with known individual cognitive processes such as the optimistic bias, and how imagining the future together can affect our memories of the past. In a preregistered study (N = 179), we provide evidence of the effect of social interaction on our projections to the future in the form of likelihood estimations of future events, on our emotional appraisal of uncertain situations, and on how we recall these same situations. These findings shed light on the functioning of cognitive processes, widely studied in an individual setting, now as embedded in a social interaction paradigm.
