Prediction Errors and Learning in Action: The Two-Year-Old Brain in the Face of Surprise

The BiSC project (ISGlobal) is one of the largest cohorts investigating how early-life exposure—particularly to air pollution—may influence infant brain development. In a subsample of two-year-old children, EEG data were recorded while they completed two tasks. The first was a multi-deviant oddball paradigm (frequency, duration, intensity, location, gap), from which mismatch negativity (MMN) responses were extracted both across all deviants and specifically for duration and frequency. The second was an associative learning task involving fast carrot-eating rabbits and slow lettuce-eating turtles, allowing the examination of ERP components related to anticipation and feedback. This presentation will introduce these tasks and the ERP measures obtained so far, as part of an ongoing exploratory analysis.
