Is there a direct relationship between Journal Impact Factor (JIF) and Manuscript Rejection Rates (MRR) in academic journals? Given the traditional use of JIF as a performance indicator in bibliometric literature, we revisit this question through the theoretical lens of performance feedback to explore JIF-based journal aspirations and their effect on MRR. While extant research on performance feedback has provided numerous contributions about the consequences of financial-based performance feedback, little is known on other non-financial performance categories despite recent calls on the topic. We use secondary data on the 30 primary journals affiliated with the American Psychological Association (APA) from the period 2004-2017 to test our hypotheses. We find that journal performance below social aspirations has a negative impact on the rejection rate of submitted manuscripts while performance above social aspirations increases manuscript rejection rates. Additionally, we find that performance above historical aspirations decreases MRR. We contribute to both bibliometric literature and performance feedback literature by studying the effect of JIF as a journal performance feedback indicator on the rejection rate of submitted manuscripts.
