Suffering is a significant and pervasive, though often neglected, aspect of organizational life, especially for organizations that must deal recurrently with painful situations. Thus, navigating the contradictory needs to work effectively while protecting the self from distressing experiences is a recurrent challenge for many organizational members. In this article, by means of an ethnographic study at a Hospice in the outskirts of Buenos Aires, we aim at refining our understanding of organizations dealing with suffering others, routinely putting its members under emotional distress. Specifically, we ask: what are the micro and organizational processes that allow organizational members facing distressing situations to create a culture of compassion?
