Workshops dedicated to the fundamentals of machine learning using MATLAB will be held on March 30th from 09:30 to 13:00 in Aula Magna, Faculty of Economics and Business. This session is aimed at teachers, researchers and students who are interested in learning more about MATLAB capabilities for machine learning or want to use low cost hardware platforms for teaching and research. An attendance certificate will be provided to all participants upon completion.

During this session, participants will review typical workflows for both supervised learning (classification and regression) and unsupervised learning (clustering). Techniques such as K-means clustering, discriminant function analysis, decision trees, neural networks, and linear as well as non-linear regression will be covered. Guest speakers will also briefly introduce attendees to more advanced techniques such as deep learning in the context of artificial vision. They will present examples of project-based learning using MATLAB, Simulink and low cost hardware (Arduino, Raspberry Pi, LEGO, mobile devices…), which allow to develop, simulate and test algorithms in a simple way by experimenting on devices available to students.

Guest speakers:

Paola Jaramillo is a MathWorks Application Engineer in Eindhoven, Netherlands, specialized in signal and image processing. Her main fields of interest are related to sensor data analytics and the deployment of applications on low cost platforms. Paola Jaramillo holds a Master’s degree in Electronic Engineering from the Polytechnic University of Turin and has worked as an R&D researcher for IBM in Switzerland.

Carlos Sanchis holds a Master’s degree in Industrial Engineering and Project Management. He has more than 8 years of experience in technical and management positions, R&D, electronics, research and consulting. He worked for numerous firms including Iberdrola, Hewlett-Packard, the Universidad Politécnica de Valencia and DevStat Statistical Consulting. As an Academic Technical Specialist for Spain and Portugal in MathWorks, he collaborates with the main universities of the region in projects related to educational innovation, research and content development with MATLAB and Simulink.
