UB-BCLC Chair on Liver Cancer

The UB-BCLC Chair on Liver Cancer aims to promote, disseminate and advance knowledge on the development, diagnosis and treatment of liver cancer.

The Chair’s main objective is to bring current knowledge on liver cancer to society, highlight unmet needs that must be addressed in order to provide optimal care from a holistic perspective, and to develop excellent research and innovation.

Therefore, lifelong learning activities:

  • Forum for interaction and training among the participants of the Chair in the so-called BCLC Networking HUB.
  • Annual update course on liver cancer, known internationally as BCLC Update.
  • Activities for patients and caregivers.
  • Study and collaborative groups to cover common needs among the members of the Chair.
  • Liver cancer hackathons.

Director

Internationally recognized doctor and scientist with expertise in liver disease and liver cancer. She currently holds several key leadership positions: she is the director of the Liver Oncology Unit at the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona since 2019, the head of the Liver Cancer Group of IDIBAPS’ Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer (BCLC), and the head of the Liver Oncology Group of the CIBER Area for Liver and Digestive Diseases (CIBEREHD) since 2022.

She is an adjunct professor at the University of Barcelona

 

Alba Díaz
Dr Alba Díaz
Deputy director. Adjunct professor of Medicine at the University of Barcelona and pathologist at the Department of Pathology at the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona

She graduated in Medicine from the University of Barcelona (2005) and specialized in pathology in the Department of Pathology at the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona (2006-2010), and completed an internship in melanoma pathology at the same hospital (2010 – 2013). Since then, she has worked as a pathologist in the Department of Pathology of this hospital, especially in the area of liver pathologies, and as an adjunct professor of Pathology at the UB

Joana Ferrer
Dr Joana Ferrer
Adjunct professor at the UB’s Department of Surgery and Surgical Specializations, she holds a PhD in Medicine, and is a member of the Hepatobiliopancreatic Surgery and Liver and Pancreas Transplant Unit of the Hospital Clínic, and of the Barcelona Clínic

She graduated in Medicine from the University of Barcelona (1995), specializing in General Surgery at the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona (2003). At the end of her residency, she received an award from Hospital Clínic in recognition of her achievements and dedication (Liver regeneration in living donor liver transplants).

Dr Alejandro Forner
Adjunct professor of Medicine at the Department of Medicine of the University of Barcelona, holds a PhD in Medicine and is a researcher at the Barcelona Clínic Liver Cancer of the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona

He graduated in Medicine from the Miguel Hernández University (1999), receiving the Extraordinary Degree Award for the best academic record in the Faculty of Medicine. He specialized in Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the Gastroenterology and Liver Unit of the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona (2001-2005) and, since 2005, he has been working at the Barcelona Clínic Liver Cancer (BCLC).

 

María Ángeles García Criado
Dr María Ángeles García Criado
Adjunct professor of Medicine at the UB’s Department of Clinical Foundations, holds a PhD in Medicine. Department of Radiology, Hospital Clínic de Barcelona and member of the BCLC

She has worked as a radiologist since 1998, subspecializing in abdominal radiology, including ultrasonography, CT and MRI. She has experience in all types of ultrasound-guided interventional procedures, especially in percutaneous treatment of liver tumours. She has been an active member of BCLC since 2008.

Tamara Saurí
Dr Tamara Saurí
Adjunct professor at the UB’s Department of Medicine, specialist in medical oncology, and head of the Gastrointestinal Cancer Unit at the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona

She completed her training with four master’s degrees, two in Molecular Oncology (2011 and 2019), one in Medical Oncology (2012) and one in Immuno-Oncology (2020). She leads the research group on upper gastrointestinal digestive tumours, within the Translational Genomics and Targeted Therapies for Solid Tumours group of the Fundació de Recerca Clínic Barcelona - Institut de Recerca Biomèdica August Pi i Sunyer (FCRB-IDIBAPS).

Jordi Bruix
Dr Jordi Bruix
Emeritus researcher at the Barcelona Clínic Liver Cancer. He was director of the Liver Oncology Unit at the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona until 2019.

He is a member of the European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL) and the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD).

He founded the International Liver Cancer Association (ILCA), which he presided over from 2006 to 2009. He has been the associate editor of the Journal of Hepatology, Liver Transplantation and Hepatology, and is currently associate editor of the Lancet Oncology and Seminars in Liver Disease, while he is also a reviewer for several official journals and agencies in Europe, the United States and Asia.

 

Jordi Rimola
Dr Jordi Rimola
He holds a PhD in Medicine and is currently at the Department of Radiology of the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona. Rimola is also a member of the Barcelona Clínic Liver Cancer Group, and the CIBER Area for Liver and Digestive Diseases (CIBERehd)

He has spent most of his career working as a doctor and researcher at the Hospital Clínic in Barcelona. According to Web of Science (accessed March 2025), he has published 152 articles including originals, reviews, editorials and clinical guidelines; he has an h-index of 45. His research has focused on inflammatory bowel disease and liver cancer.

In the field of liver cancer, he is currently a member of the BCLC group, where he coordinates the radiology area, which includes six diagnostic-interventional radiologists and three purely interventional radiologists.

Marco Sanduzzi-Zamparelli
Dr Marco Sanduzzi-Zamparelli
He holds a PhD Medicine and is a researcher at the Barcelona Clínic Liver Cancer of the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona.

He is a specialist in Gastroenterology and Hepatology, with a career focused on liver cancer. He trained at the Federico II University of Naples (2018) with a clinical research stay at the BCLC (2017-2018). He earned his PhD in Medicine from the University of Barcelona in 2023 (extraordinary doctoral prize), with a stay at the University of Oslo (2020). His research focuses on liver cancer, and on translational research aspects such as microbiota, immunoinflammation and response to immunotherapy.

Marta Fortuny
Dr Marta Fortuny
She holds a PhD in Medicine and is a researcher at the Barcelona Clínic Liver Cancer at the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona.

She graduated in Medicine from the University of Navarra (2018) and is a specialist in Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the Gastroenterology and Liver Unit of the Germans Trias i Pujol University Hospital (2019-2023). Since July 2023, she has been a member of the Barcelona Clínic Liver Cancer (BCLC).

Carla Fuster
Dr Carla Fuster
Doctor of Medicine at the Department of Pathological Anatomy, Hospital Clínic de Barcelona and member of BCLC.

She graduated in Medicine from the University of Barcelona (2015). She obtained certification in Pathology at the Department of Pathology of the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona (2016-2020) and completed a fellowship in Hepatocellular Carcinoma at the same hospital (2020-2022).

Since 2023, she has been working as a pathologist in the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona’s Pathology Department in digestive pathology, with special interest in the area of liver pathology. She is currently working on her PhD in tumour microenvironment in hepatocellular carcinoma.

Graduate in Nursing and member of Barcelona Clínic Liver Cancer at the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona.

She graduated in Nursing from the University of Barcelona (1994) and got a master’s degree in Nursing Sciences from the Jaume I University (2012). She has been working at the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona since 1993 in various surgical units, including seven years in the Liver Surgery and Transplant Unit. In 2010, she joined Barcelona Clínic Liver Cancer.

 

Gemma Iserte

Graduate in Nursing and member of Barcelona Clínic Liver Cancer at the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona.

She graduated in Nursing from the University of Barcelona (2010), obtained a master’s degree in Hospital Emergency Nursing from the same university (2012) and completed the postgraduate programme in Anaesthesia and Resuscitation at the Sant Joan de Déu University Campus (2013).

She has been working at the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona since 2010, initially at the Institute of Digestive and Metabolic Diseases and for the last three years at the Liver Surgery and Transplant Unit. In December 2014, she joined the BCLC.

Ismael Macías
Dr Ismael Macias
Specialist in medical oncology, assistant doctor in the team of the Gastrointestinal Tumour Unit of the Upper Treatment Unit of the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona.

He is a specialist in Medical Oncology, with a PhD from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona in 2023. He completed his training with master’s degrees in Molecular Oncology (2019) and in Neuroendocrine Tumours (2022). He has an extensive professional, clinical and research career collaborating in the Translational Genomics and Targeted Therapies for Solid Tumours group led by Dr Aleix Prat at the FCRB-IDIBAPS.

Dra. Amparo Cobo
Dr Amparo Cobo
Doctor at the Nuclear Medicine Department of the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona and member of the BCLC

She holds a PhD from the Complutense University of Madrid and a degree in Medicine from the University of Cadiz, specializing in Nuclear Medicine at the Hospital Clínic in Valladolid. She is part of the Nuclear Medicine Service team at the Hospital Clínic in Barcelona and is a member of the BCLC. She is also a member of the European Association of Nuclear Medicine (EANM) and the Spanish Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging (SEMNIM).

Joel Mases
Dr Joel Mases
He holds a PhD in Medicine, specializing in Radiation Oncology and is a member of BCLC

Graduate in Medicine from the University of Barcelona, with a specialization in Radiation Oncology from the Catalan Institute of Oncology, and a master’s degree in Molecular Oncology from the National Cancer Research Centre (CNIO). He currently works as a radiological oncologist at the Hospital Clínic in Barcelona, sub-specializing in genitourinary and hepatic malignancies.

Dr Martha Burrell
Senior specialist in the interventional radiology unit of the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona and member of the BCLC.

Graduate in Medicine from the University of Barcelona, specializing in Radiology at the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona. Her doctoral thesis, Angiografía por resonancia magnética en el estudio del carcinoma hepatocelular, was awarded summa cum laude. She has been a member of the Department of Radiology and the Interventional Radiology Unit of the Diagnostic Imaging Centre at the Hospital Clínic in Barcelona.

Alexandre Soler
Dr Alexandre Soler
Doctor at the Radiology Department of the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona and member of the BCLC

Graduate in Medicine from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, specializing in Radiology at the Hospital Clínic in Barcelona. He currently works as a staff radiologist in the Radiology Service of the BCLC.

He subspecialized in hepatobiliary and gastrointestinal pathologies. He has clinical experience in ultrasound, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging and multiple interventional procedures in liver diseases.

Dr Anna Darnell
Doctor at the Radiology Department of the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona and member of the BCLC

Graduate in Medicine from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, specializing in Radiology at the Hospital Parc Taulí in Sabadell. She is currently an assistant radiologist in the Radiology Department of the BCLC.

Mario Matute

Doctor at the Radiology Department of the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona. Member of the Barcelona Clínic Liver Cancer Group

He graduated in Medicine from the University of the Basque Country and completed his specialization in Radiology at the Hospital Clínic in Barcelona. Since October 2024, he has been working as a staff radiologist in the Radiology Department and is an active member of the BCLC.
