Pertenece a la familia del circón con tetraedros de silicio unidos por átomos de Zr<sup>4+</sup> con coordinación 8</p> <p><strong>Estructura de circón</strong></p> <p><img alt="" src="http://www.ub.edu/cmematerials/sites/default/files/UnitatEstructural/Pigment%20coral.jpg" style="width: 425px; height: 415px;" /></p> <p><strong>Estructuras cristalinas:</strong> Rosa o pink-coral de hierro (Zr, Fe) SiO4 (14-44-5) todavía se discute si el hierro está en solución sólida, es una inclusión o las dos hipótesis a la vez. Los cloruros y fluoruros de sodio catalizan la reacción. Presentan gran estabilidad.</p> <p><strong>Observaciones:</strong> La estructura del circón consiste en cadenas alternadas de tetraedros de SiO<sub>4</sub> y dodecaedros de ZrO<sub>8</sub> que comparten una arista en el eje c. Las cadenas están unidas lateralmente compartiendo aristas entre dodecaedros, cada poliedro de ZrO<sub>8</sub> comparte dos aristas con los grupos SiO<sub>4</sub>, cuatro aristas con los otro dos dodecaedros y forma cadenas de dodecaedros en la dirección del eje b.
