Whenever the research activity or teaching practice involves the use of biological agents that may pose a risk to human, animal, plant or environmental health, and is carried out in UB facilities, an analysis and evaluation of the risks that the activity may pose must be carried out and documented and notified to the CBSUB.
This analysis will be carried out by the principal investigator or the person in charge of teaching and will be notified by e-mail (cbsub@ub.edu). The analysis shall be documented and made available to the competent administrative authority for the protection of health and the environment.

Activities that need to be appraised and declared to the CBSUB
In order to ensure adequate safety and health conditions and to comply with current legal requirements, the CBSUB must be notified of the following activities:
- All activities involving the manipulation and/or confined use of genetically modified organisms.
- All activities with deliberate use of biological agents of risk group 2 or higher or samples that contain them or suspect their presence.
- All activities involving intentional release of GMOs into the environment.
Research projects or experimental procedures
All principal investigators (PIs) of research projects and/or experimental procedures that have biosafety implications and that are carried out at UB facilities must carry out an analysis of the health and environmental risks of the activity and submit it to the CBSUB by e-mail (cbsub@ub.edu).
Online form for the communication of information to CBSUB Research.
Based on the information provided, the CBSUB will review whether the minimum requirements defined by the applicable legislation are met.
When the activity is reviewed and evaluated favorably, a certificate signed by the president of the CBSUB will be issued and delivered to the PI.
In those cases in which the proposed activity is carried out in UB facilities under a service regime (stables, cultivation rooms, etc.), a previous visit and approval from the person in charge of the facility and/or the person responsible for biosafety of the same will be required, without this implying a favorable assessment from the point of view of biosafety until obtaining the authorization of the CBSUB.
Teaching practices
Experimental teaching practices involve risks that must be known, prevented and controlled with adequate safety measures to avoid accidents.
Risks can be of very different nature depending on the type of practices (e.g. physical, chemical, biological, etc.). The teaching staff responsible for the practice is obliged to inform their students of these risks and the preventive measures adopted in each case.
The CBSUB, together with the UB’s Prevention Service -the Office of Safety, Health and Environment (OSSMA)-, offers the possibility of advising on those issues of the internship activities that the teaching staff deems appropriate, from a biosafety point of view, that the teaching staff considers appropriate, from a biosafety point of view, with the aim of providing support to the entire university community and achieving continuous improvement in safety and health at the UB. The current contact method for these assessments is by e-mail: cbsub@ub.edu.
