Biosafety can be defined as the set of measures applied to prevent and protect against possible unintentional exposure to biological agents, and describes the principles of containment, the technologies and procedures to be applied (design of facilities, construction elements, organisation, working practices, safety equipment, etc.) in order to prevent and protect human, animal, plant and environmental health.
The Biosafety Committee of the University of Barcelona (CBSUB) was created with the aim of assessing, evaluating and supporting the University in scientific research and teaching activities involving the use of biological agents, and to ensure that the obligations required by biosafety regulations are fulfilled.

The CBSUB is made up of a specialised and multidisciplinary group of professionals who act voluntarily and independently in the development of the institutional biosafety programme. It works in coordination with the Office of Safety, Health and the Environment (OSSMA), the Ethical Committee on Animal Experimentation (CEEA), the Bioethics Committee and other UB committees and commissions, in all aspects of biosafety related to the use of biological agents in research projects, teaching activities and the facilities where they are carried out.
