Technology to speed up bacterial detection in drinking water

It allows to detect any bacteriological presence in the water in a short period of time and to facilitate a quick action.

In addition to the microbiological control of water intended for human consumption, water from supply systems and bottled water contain environmental microorganisms that must be analyzed. Knowing the microbiological composition of all this microbiota is essential to be able to improve treatment systems.

Faced with this challenge, the University of Barcelona – through the MARS research group (Microbiology of Water Related to Health) – and the University of Valencia – through the Spanish Collection of Type Cultures (CECT) – obtained the MALDI-TOF molecular fingerprint (matrix-assisted laser desorption/ Ionisation-time-of-flight mass spectrometry) of 320 strains, many of them corresponding to new bacterial species, thereby increasing the potential for identifying existing aquatic bacteria.
