New informational vinyls in the booths to improve safety in the laboratories of the University of Barcelona

New informational vinyl signs have been installed on laboratory workstations, in an initiative driven by the Office of Safety, Health and Environment (OSSMA), with the aim of reinforcing biosafety and facilitating clear identification of the equipment. The measure responds to the need to distinguish immediately between biological safety cabinets (BSCs) and laminar flow cabinets, thereby reducing potential errors in use.

The new vinyl signs remind us that CSBs are designed to protect personnel, the sample and the environment simultaneously, whereas laminar flow cabinets protect only the product. The latter offer no protection to personnel and therefore cannot be used for procedures involving pathogenic biological agents. Signage helps to visually reinforce this distinction, which is particularly relevant in laboratories handling hazardous agents.

With this initiative, OSSMA continues to work to promote a culture of safety and ensure the proper use of containment equipment. The University thus reaffirms its commitment to safe research environments, the protection of the scientific community and compliance with current biosafety protocols.
