(Photograph by Ra\u00fal S\u00e1nchez Mart\u00ednez)<\/em>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide ticss-2b24afe8\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Barcelona, 10 and 13 May 2023.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Staff from the Red Cross and Barcelona City Council\u2019s Nausica programme participated in the Socio-Sports Meetings implemented by the University of Barcelona (UB) between refugees and students of social issues, education, pedagogy, psychology and sports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The training seminar was held at the University of Barcelona\u2019s Mundet Campus and was attended by more than 20 participants from many different countries: Senegal, Brazil, Bolivia, the Philippines, Algeria, Guinea, Peru, Afghanistan and Spain. Francesc Busc\u00e0, the director of the \u2018COMMUNITY\u2019 project and a professor at the UB Faculty of Education, also participated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-7387b849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The event was organised so that organisations working on refugee and asylum issues experience the Socio-Sports Meetings and assess the possibility of establishing an agreement with the UB to replicate them within their organisations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both the Red Cross and Barcelona City Council\u2019s Nausica programme work on welcoming and supporting refugees and asylum seekers to ensure that they have an independent life and integrate into society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00abIt is a very fun and enriching experience where people with different cultures, languages and ages socialise naturally\u00bb, said the Red Cross psychologist during the evaluation of the Socio-Sports Meeting.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-center is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\"><div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img data-opt-id=1080024420  fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1015\" height=\"1015\" src=\"https:\/\/mlrs8jfvglcz.i.optimole.com\/cb:X94i.2946c\/w:auto\/h:auto\/q:mauto\/f:best\/https:\/\/www.ub.edu\/community\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/vlcsnap-2023-05-15-13h21m10s211_modif-quadrada_web.jpg\" alt=\"Participants carrying out a cooperative challenge at the Socio-Sports Meeting.\" class=\"wp-image-2128\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mlrs8jfvglcz.i.optimole.com\/cb:X94i.2946c\/w:1015\/h:1015\/q:mauto\/f:best\/https:\/\/www.ub.edu\/community\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/vlcsnap-2023-05-15-13h21m10s211_modif-quadrada_web.jpg 1015w, https:\/\/mlrs8jfvglcz.i.optimole.com\/cb:X94i.2946c\/w:300\/h:300\/q:mauto\/f:best\/https:\/\/www.ub.edu\/community\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/vlcsnap-2023-05-15-13h21m10s211_modif-quadrada_web.jpg 300w, https:\/\/mlrs8jfvglcz.i.optimole.com\/cb:X94i.2946c\/w:150\/h:150\/q:mauto\/f:best\/https:\/\/www.ub.edu\/community\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/vlcsnap-2023-05-15-13h21m10s211_modif-quadrada_web.jpg 150w, https:\/\/mlrs8jfvglcz.i.optimole.com\/cb:X94i.2946c\/w:768\/h:768\/q:mauto\/f:best\/https:\/\/www.ub.edu\/community\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/vlcsnap-2023-05-15-13h21m10s211_modif-quadrada_web.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Participants carrying out a cooperative challenge at the Socio-Sports Meeting.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Precisely, one of the objectives of these Meetings is to promote coexistence and mutual knowledge between refugees and their host community to reduce the segregation of society and fight against the racism, xenophobia and discrimination suffered by these people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As Francesc Busc\u00e0, the director of the &#8216;COMMUNITY&#8217; project, explained at the conference, \u201cthe methodology used in the Socio-Sports Meetings is based on a different concept of sport than usual, because it leaves aside competitiveness to foster positive and healthy links through cooperative motor-skill games\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen activities based on standard sports are carried out, such as football or basketball, people tend to group into teams according to their origin, which promotes segregation and can cause conflicts to appear\u201d, said Professor Busc\u00e0.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cUsing cooperative motor-skill games also establishes the dynamics of collaboration and opposition typical of these sports, but as the roles of the participants change much more often, competition takes a backseat and cohesion and rapprochement are promoted\u201d, the project director explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Socio-Sports Meetings as a tool for social inclusion<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The UB Socio-Sports Meetings are a socio-educational intervention model based on physical activity that promotes social cohesion between refugees and their host communities. Among other benefits, they promote social inclusion and facilitate the well-being of these people, using sport as a tool for inclusion and social transformation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This model, which has been developed since 1993, has been replicated in other universities in Catalonia, Spain, Europe and Latin America. The aim of this seminar is to move it beyond the university environment and to replicate it in organisations that work directly with refugees and asylum seekers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The event was organised by the \u2018COMMUNITY\u2019 project of the University of Barcelona\u2019s Faculty of Education, which enjoys the collaboration of Fundaci\u00f3 Solidaritat UB and is financed by the European Union. The training seminar also had the support of the UB\u2019s Institute of Professional Development (IDP-ICE).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\"
