But what does the term actually mean? Is it an established and useful framework, or simply another addition to the expanding glossary of diversity and inclusion?

Based on recent literature (Schaper, 2024; Chang et al. 2023; Sony & Rashid, 2025 )—it is clear that gender literacy is not only conceptually sound, but also socially and educationally necessary. Moreover, the GEDIS project shows how gender literacy can be integrated into institutional practices to create more inclusive learning and working environments.

Defining Gender Literacy

According to Schaper (2024) gender literacy can be defined as the ability to critically understand, interpret, and engage with the ways gender roles, norms, and identities are constructed and performed in society. Gender literacy also involves:

Understanding gender-related issues and how they affect individuals and communities.

Developing the skills to critically reflect on socially constructed gender narratives.

Recognizing one’s own values and beliefs about gender roles and rules.

Challenging stereotypes, discriminatory attitudes, and systemic biases.

Chang et al. (2023) noted that gender is not a fixed essence but a performative act, a view drawn from Judith Butler’s seminal theory of gender performativity. Gender literacy includes the capacity to read and critique the ongoing “doing” of gender—not just in others, but also in oneself.

Why Gender Literacy Matters

The significance of gender literacy extends beyond theoretical debates. Through these mentioned readings, it underscores its impact on a wide range of outcomes:

Promoting gender equality and encourages social resilience.

Helping individuals validate their own identities and maintain a positive self-image.

The reduction of unhealthy gender interactions and fosters more respectful relationships.

The acceptance of all gender identities, particularly those of marginalised sexual minorities such as trans and non-binary individuals.

It challenges the assumption that gender roles are biologically predetermined.

It supports informed social decision-making and reduces susceptibility to gender-based prejudice and misinformation.

Gender literacy also plays a key role in countering genderism, defined as the institutional privileging of binary gender categories and the exclusion of those who do not conform to them.

Gender Literacy in Educational Practice

Educational settings are crucial arenas for developing gender literacy. Feminist pedagogies have long stressed that schools and universities are spaces of knowledge transmission and sites where social norms—including those related to gender—are reproduced and challenged. In Schaper’s (2024) study, primary school students in Spain participated in a series of maker workshops focused on building interactive toys. These sessions, grounded in feminist pedagogical principles, enabled students to reflect critically on gender stereotypes embedded in play and toy design. Through hands-on activities, dialogue, and collaborative design, children recognized their assumptions and developed alternative, cross-gendered models.

A key insight from these studies is that gender awareness must be cultivated early. Research shows that rigid gender beliefs begin to form in early childhood and become more difficult to unlearn in adolescence and adulthood. Therefore, developing gender literacy at school age is both a preventive and empowering strategy.

The Academic Dimension: Lessons from Bangladesh

Sony and Rashid (2025) investigated the status of gender literacy among secondary school students in Bangladesh. Their study found high gender role awareness, but lower gender literacy among high-performing students.

The authors explain the paradox through limited gender literacy integration. Schools lack structured gender education for boys and diverse learners. Curricula mostly focus on female empowerment in gender-related content. This approach ignores wider, inclusive views of gender diversity.

This finding underscores the importance of embedding gender literacy across all areas of the curriculum—not merely as a module in citizenship education or a discussion point during awareness weeks, but as a transversal competence relevant to every field.

GEDIS: Integrating Gender Literacy into Higher Education

GEDIS project exemplifies how gender literacy can be mobilised as both an educational objective and a methodological tool. Focused on Library and Information Science (LIS) education, GEDIS addresses a gap often overlooked: how future information professionals are—or are not—trained to understand gender dimensions in data, information access, and knowledge representation.

Gender literacy in GEDIS is therefore both a goal and a means:

As a goal, the project seeks to ensure that students and educators develop the critical tools necessary to identify and address gender bias in catalogues, metadata, research systems, and learning environments.

As a means, gender literacy is used as a framework to evaluate curricula, train faculty, design self-diagnosis tools for institutions, and develop inclusive open educational resources (OERs).

The GEDIS project shows how this can be done in practice: by integrating gender literacy into the heart of institutional development, improving collaboration between disciplines, and creating tools that support both awareness and action.

In an age of evolving social structures and growing awareness of inequality, the concept of gender literacy has become increasingly …

https://raw.githubusercontent.com/gediseuproject/gedis-media-repo/main/wordpress-images/thumbnails/Gender_Literacy_Thumbnail.jpg
[40

post-1101","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-uncategorized-en","latest_post

Gender Literacy in Education and Society: Does It Make Sense?
