What is the GEHC?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

It is a multidisciplinary research team specialized in the history of cartography and geographic information<\/strong>. We are interested in maps as geohistorical documents and as cultural products that reflect the evolution of art, science and technology. We investigate the career of professional cartographers, their training process and the institutions in which they carry out their work. We studied, in particular, medieval and Renaissance nautical cartography, Spanish military and colonial cartography, the modernization of topographic cartography in Catalonia and Spain, the evolution of cadastral cartography and political and administrative cartography.<\/p>\n

During the last few years we have carried out an extensive task of cataloging and dissemination<\/strong> of cartographic documentation. We have also devoted increasing attention to the tasks of preserving the valuable cartographic heritage<\/strong> of our country, part of which is, unfortunately, in a precarious state of conservation. At present, we deal the development of urban cartography<\/strong> and, in particular, the evolution of Barcelona cartography<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Since 1997, the GEHC has received support through successive competitive research projects<\/strong> financed by the Ministerio de Ciencia y Tecnolog\u00eda and the Generalitat de Catalunya, and has established research contracts with the Diputaci\u00f3 de Barcelona and the Cartographic and Geological Institute of Catalonia. The group maintains relationships with similar research teams in Argentina, the United States, France, Great Britain, Italy, Mexico and Portugal. Since 2009, the GEHC has been a consolidated research group recognized by the Generalitat de Catalunya.<\/p>\n
