L’impacte de les activitats humanes al medi marí augmenta constantment i el Gmar està compromès amb l’aplicació de tècniques innovadores per identificar i quantificar aquest impacte en diferents vessants.
Investigadors de Gmar han innovat en el desenvolupament de tècniques per l’estudi de les deixalles marines, des de les mega i macrodeixalles acumulades als fons marins i els seus mecanismes de transport pels corrents marins, fins als microplàstics i les microfibres sintètiques a les aigües superficials, la columna d’aigua, els sediments, organismes i ecosistemes. Els membres de Gmar treballant en aquesta línia de recerca han sigut també pioners en fomentar la implicació de la ciutadania en les tasques pròpies de la recerca i en la recollida de mostres científiques de microplàstics flotant a la Mediterrània i l’Atlàntic, i compten actualment amb diversos projectes finançats de ciència ciutadana i d’alfabetització oceànica.
L’augment de metalls i metal·loides en els oceans com a conseqüència de l’activitat humana és un repte ambiental amb repercussions sobre els ecosistemes marins, la pesca i la salut humana. Gmar investiga la transferència i remobilització d’aquests elements en zones costaneres amb alta pressió industrial, minera, agrícola i urbana, analitzant els processos de transport i deposició des de la plataforma continental fins a l’oceà profund, posant especial atenció en els efectes del canvi climàtic sobre els cicles biogeoquímics dels metalls i en la resuspensió des de dipòsits contaminats.
