Aquesta regi\u00f3 representa un puntestrat\u00e8gic per al transport d\u2019Aigua Atl\u00e0ntica (<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Atlantic Water, AW<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">) i d\u2019Aigua Interm\u00e8dia Occidental (<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Western Intermediate Water, WIW) <\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a la Mediterr\u00e0nia Occidental. La WIW es forma principalment durant l\u2019hivern sota condicions atmosf\u00e8riques severes a la plataforma continental del golf de Lle\u00f3 i a la mar Balear, a partir de la convecci\u00f3 de l\u2019AW. Aquestes masses d\u2019aigua circulen cicl\u00f2nicament a trav\u00e9s de la Corrent del Nord seguint el tal\u00fas continental fins arribar a l\u2019arxip\u00e8lag Balear. En arribar-hi, una part d\u2019aquestes masses d\u2019aigua circula cap els Canals Balears -considerats punts clau per a l\u2019intercanvi entre les conques Proven\u00e7al i Algeriana-, mentre que una altra branca recircula cap al nord de l\u2019arxip\u00e8lag formant la Corrent Balear, qu\u00e8 circula pel tal\u00fas nord de les Illes Balears. Malgrat el seu paper potencial com a via de transport d\u2019aquestes masses d\u2019aigua, la din\u00e0mica de la Corrent Balear continua essent poc coneguda.<\/span><span
