On this occasion, we are delighted to welcome Miriam Ticktin (CUNY Graduate Center and the Center for Place, Culture and Politics – CPCP), who will deliver the lecture:
“Thinking with and beyond Innocence: From Liberal to Illiberal Politics”

Miriam Ticktin is Director of The Center for Place, Culture and Politics (CPCP) and Professor of Anthropology and Black, Race and Ethnic Studies at the CUNY (City University of New York) Graduate Center. She publishes widely on topics such as migration, borders, humanitarianism, and racial and gendered inequalities, and most recently, she has written about the idea of decolonial feminist commoning. She is the author of Casualties of Care: Immigration and the Politics of Humanitarianism in France (2012); co-editor of In the Name of Humanity: The Government of Threat and Care (2010); and her latest book is Against Innocence: Undoing and Remaking the World (2025). She is currently working on her next book, Containment and Commoning: From Bordered Worlds to Collective Life. Ticktin writes in public venues such as Truthout, LARB and Open Democracy, and organizes with migrant social justice groups in the US and in France.
Abstract: Through the lens of recent political events around migration and border control, and ongoing imperial wars, I will suggest that claims to innocence serve as a battleground for the shifting relationship between liberalism and illiberalism/fascism in the contemporary world, and as the ground of contemporary politics of racial capitalism. I will argue that innocence helps facilitate this shift along the continuum of liberal/illiberal, both through the claiming of racial innocence and through a shifting of the concept itself, toward its meanings of purity, hygiene and cleansing. I will conclude by discussing non-innocent political formations of collective life, or commoning.
