The Emergence of Right-Wing Movements in German and Spanish Regions<\/strong><\/p>\n Ref. Right-wing actors in particular are propagating their agenda with reference to the alleged values and traditions of a local landscape to be defended against immigration, capitalist modernity and the green energy transition. A common explanation for these political shifts focuses on the neglect of rural regions that is held to have led to a decline in trust in established parties, while right-wing movements have gained ground and political opposition has become increasingly extra-parliamentary. In order to achieve profound changes and encourage the implementation and social acceptance of sustainability transitions, we need to understand agricultural systems from a holistic perspective, integrating the dynamic interplay between ecological and social dimensions, and we need to understand not only what farmers do and the environmental impact of their practices, but also why farmers do what they do, and how their worldviews, knowledge, values, and social relations and contexts affect their decisions and change throughout time.<\/p>\n This project aims to investigate how changes in agricultural practices that are implemented through agroecological transitions are reflected in the biophysical functioning of farm systems and, at the same time, are linked with social and cultural changes in farmers, and in farm systems as social-ecological systems. Applying interdisciplinary and participatory methodologies, this work will bridge two growing fields of research: social metabolism and biocultural approaches. EUR2025-164837 Moral dilemmas in the hinterlands: development, conservation and sacrifice on the paths to green transition [HINTERLANDS]<\/p>\n This project addresses the social, economic, and ecological sustainability of the European Green Deal’s energy transition. Its aim is to understand the values \u200b\u200bthat are important to the people and institutions involved in clean energy production. To understand how people involved in different energy production spaces perceive their objectives, the research will analyse social practices and discourses related to access to land for various purposes, access to and management of water, employment and labour relations, and household income, financial investments, and subsidies derived from green hydrogen projects. This research project, funded by the Canadian Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council, explores the interplay between state border tactics, migration exploitation, and how people on the move navigate bordering practices, including externalization, in Mexico and beyond. Mexico\u2019s southern borderlands now function as a \u2018distant\u2019 proxy border. The number of migrants staying in southern Mexico has risen sharply over the past years amid increasingly discriminatory immigration policies and practices in the U.S. This area is very unsafe for migrants, especially women moving alone or with children, and it hosts large-scale industrial extraction projects and transnational export-production processes that rely on migrants\u2019 labor. While waiting and coping in this region and other similarly externalized border zones, people seeking safety take on precarious and gendered jobs in sectors like resource extraction, maquiladora manufacturing, farming, and services such as restaurants and sanitation. Centering geopolitical and transnational feminist perspectives and engaging participatory methodologies, this project elicits and theorizes how exploitation at \u2018distant\u2019 borders is linked to externalized migration governance, forming new gendered economies of exploitation, violence, and care. It also explores how migrants navigate these realities in Mexico\u2019s southern borderlands and beyond. The historical rise of household debt has emerged as a central concern in the context of European and international policy. The deregulation of financial markets in recent decades has contributed to domestic reproduction being increasingly shaped and mediated by the interests and forces of financial institutions, which have seen renewed opportunities for profit extraction in the domain of social reproduction. Although women, following their traditional social roles as caregivers, are largely accessing and managing household debt, little is known about the crucial role they play in both domestic reproduction and credit markets.<\/p>\n The research proposed within the framework of the Basque Government’s Postdoctoral Research Program aims to understand the particular expressions and implications that the expansion of household debt has for female members of the household. Based on ethnographic immersion in indebted households, it will investigate the “sexual division of debt” (Guerin et al. 2023) in two distinct contexts: Mexico and the Basque Country. The concern is particularly strong in the area of electrical and electronic equipment (EEE), as they are multi-material products, some parts and substances are hazardous and their dismantling potentially toxic. In addition, waste from electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) is considered the fastest growing type of household residues in the world and the level of irregularity in the recycling of WEEE is high.<\/p>\n The RECI project aims to understand the moral, legal, infrastructural and labour complexities of the reuse economy and, at the same time, to reframe the problem. Instead of focusing solely on the urban informal economy, as most ethnographic studies on waste do, it analyses the commercial circuits that intertwine unregistered actors and informal practices with the official and recognised WEEE recycling sectors. Moreover, many EEE are durable products that even in their final life cycle do not become \u201cwaste\u201d, but are accumulated in households to be re-circulated. Studying repair and re-use implies recognising the existence of a craft world of mending, maintaining and caring for objects juxtaposed to industrial production, and which is indispensable for the sustainability and eventual Circular Economy (CE) of EEE. The project focuses transversally on manual labour as a source of value, an unrecognised value produced, on the one hand, by marginalised and stigmatised people in the informal recycling economy and, on the other hand, by repairers displaced by the logics of programmed obsolescence and hyper-consumption. Amid a full-fledged energy crisis, we unpack the complex processes of decarbonization and analyse its socio-economic consequences. We focus on transitional livelihoods and senses of (in)justice among communities at the very frontline; simultaneously experiencing the rapid decline of coal- based energy production and the promises and marginalities of new green investments. We analyse the impact of industrial decline, energy market regulation, and green finance on labour, social reproduction, and political (im)mobilization. PID2020-114317GB-I00 Aquest projecte abordar\u00e0 els dilemes de l’aprovisionament alimentari causats pel COVID-19 a Espanya des de les perspectives de la producci\u00f3 i el consum i la interacci\u00f3 amb la valoraci\u00f3 de les persones i els circuits de valoritzaci\u00f3 econ\u00f2mica. Els objectes principals d’aquesta investigaci\u00f3 s\u00f3n: (1) En primer lloc, avaluar l’impacte sobre l’aprovisionament alimentari de les normes de confinament, el tancament de fronteres i la vulnerabilitat al lloc de treball deguts a la pand\u00e8mia, per tal de prevenir situacions similars en el futur i planificar estrat\u00e8gies sostenibles a llarg termini. (2) Segon, investigar les possibles causes pol\u00edtiques, econ\u00f2miques i socials de les pautes de vulnerabilitat i contagi. (3) Finalment, analitzar com els diferents actors socials han compr\u00e8s i s’han adaptat als desafiaments de la nova situaci\u00f3 i avaluar la sostenibilitat de les noves pr\u00e0ctiques i significats. FJC2020-042879-I La investigaci\u00f3 analitza les diferents problem\u00e0tiques en que es troben les cadenes curtes de producci\u00f3 i distribuci\u00f3 agr\u00edcoles i ramaderes per dur a terme la seva activitat. S’estudien els efectes de les diverses maneres de regulaci\u00f3 (formals o informals) sobre les pr\u00e0ctiques agr\u00e0ries. El projecte contempla de quina forma aquest escenari social i cultural a partir del Covid-19 afecta la petita producci\u00f3 i distribuci\u00f3 a Espanya. En aquest sentit, examina les tensions i relacions de poder entre diversos grups socials que generen contextos d’inclusi\u00f3\/exclusi\u00f3, vulnerabilitat i segregaci\u00f3 en les diverses formes d’aprovisionament alimentari. El projecte MINPOL, finan\u00e7at amb fons europeus, estudiar\u00e0 aquest fenomen per aclarir el concepte de ciutadania industrial en el context de la reindustrialitzaci\u00f3 de les societats rurals europees. El projecte estudiar\u00e0 la pol\u00edtica minera espanyola, centrant-se en un cas pr\u00e0ctic al sud-oest d’Espanya. A m\u00e9s, analitzar\u00e0 l\u2019impacte local de les pol\u00edtiques de recuperaci\u00f3 de la mineria. Per valorar la polititzaci\u00f3 que pot sorgir a partir de la reobertura de les mines, MINPOL investigar\u00e0 espais p\u00fablics, associacions i accions col\u00b7lectives.<\/p>\n El projecte es desenvolupar\u00e0 al llarg de tres vies de recerca. 1. La recerca es basa en la suposici\u00f3 te\u00f2rica que l’energia \u00e9s una relaci\u00f3 multicapa i multidimensional que estructura significativament les relacions de poder tant entre la societat i la naturalesa com entre les persones mateixes. A trav\u00e9s d’una mirada etnogr\u00e0fica hist\u00f2ricament informada, s’abordar\u00e0 l’energia des de baix, destacant les pr\u00e0ctiques di\u00e0ries, els significats i les valoracions de m\u00faltiples actors. Espec\u00edficament, l’estudi es focalitza en el proc\u00e9s de producci\u00f3 d’energia, mirant a les experi\u00e8ncies i rutes dels seus treballadors (que tamb\u00e9 s\u00f3n consumidors), tant en el sector miner de lignit com en els esquemes de producci\u00f3 d’energia solar (parcs fotovoltaics).
