SUMMARY:Dispensing with Concepts
DESCRIPTION:extra sessionThere aren&#39\;t any &quot\;empirical concepts&qu
ot\; as traditionally conceived byphilosophers and psychologists of the la
st century. &nbsp\;These concepts weretraditionally thought to be indicate
 d just by exhibiting a word: &quot\;theconcept dog&quot\; or &quot\;our co
ncept of a university.&quot\; They were thought to be orcorrespond to stru
ctures within the mind common to all persons whounderstood such a word. A
concept was the sort of thing that you couldgrasp and I could grasp too --
the very same concept. &nbsp\;I will argue thatthere are no such things -
 - that no similarities whatever can be takenfor granted between two person
&#39\;s ideas corresponding to the sameempirical term. Words for empirical
properties and kinds refer directly\,without mediation\, to real entities
in the world -- to properties\, toreal kinds &nbsp\;-- as in the case of
individuals. &nbsp\;To make this case I willhave to talk first about the s
tructure of the world\, and of the languagethat makes reference to it. &nb
sp\;Then I must explain what is in the mindinstead of a concept when someo
ne understands an empirical term. &nbsp\;Third\,I must explain how the min
ds of different individual language users areable to grasp a common world
 through the medium of language.
