SUMMARY:Mathematical Explanation
DESCRIPTION:               I propose a new deductive-nomological model for 
 mathematical scientific explanation. In this regard\, I will inflate Hempe
 l&rsquo\;s deductive-nomological model with mathematics and test it agains
 t some recent paradigmatic examples of mathematical explanation of empiric
 al phenomena: bridges of K&ouml\;nigsberg\, North American synchronized ci
 cadas and H&eacute\;non-Heiles Hamiltonian systems. I will argue that math
 ematical scientific explanations that invoke laws of nature are qualitativ
 e explanations\; and ordinary scientific explanations that employ mathemat
 ics are quantitative explanations. I will analyse the repercussions of thi
 s deductive-nomological model on mathematical indispensability arguments a
 nd causal/non-causal theories of explanation.
