SUMMARY:Reading McGowan: Conversational exercitives
DESCRIPTION:Initial presentation by Isidora StojanovicIn this paper\, I pre
sent a new (i.e.\, previously overlooked) breed of exercitive speech act
(the conversational exercitive). I establish that any conversational cont
ribution that invokes a rule of accommodation changes the bounds of conve
rsational permissibility and is therefore an (indirect) exercitive speech
act. Such utterances enact permissibility facts without expressing the c
ontent of such facts\, without the speaker intending to be enacting such
facts and without the hearer recognizing that it is so. Because of the pe
culiar nature of the rules of accommodation that generate them\, conversa
tional exercitives have importantly different felicity conditions and the
refore constitute a new breed of exercitive speech act. McGowan\, Mary K
ate (2004). Conversational exercitives: Something else we do with our word
