SUMMARY:Reference in Fiction
DESCRIPTION:No one would deny that works of nonfiction refer to real indivi
duals andevents. If I read a biography of Napoleon\, I take the work to re
fer toNapoleon. But many literary scholars and philosophers have claimed t
hatreference either fails or is at best irrelevant in fiction\, so that ev
enwhen fictions are about the real world this &quot\;aboutness&quot\; is m
erely indirect. From this perspective\, my imaginings in response to War an
d Peace cannotrepresent the real Napoleon\, or at least not in the same wa
y as thebiography. I argue to the contrary that works of fiction often ref
er to realindividuals in the same way as nonfiction. I develop an account
of referencein stories and argue that reference matters to the appreciatio
 n of fiction.
