DESCRIPTION:Diego Marconi (Universit&agrave\; degli Studi di Torino) Semant
 ic competence is the ability to understand sentences (more generally\, exp
 ressions) of a natural language. I will sketch a history of the debates co
 ncerning semantic competence\, from Chomsky&#39\;s introduction of the gen
 eral notion of linguistic competence (1965) to present-day &quot\;simulati
 onists&quot\; models of language understanding\, wich identify semantic co
 mpetence with the ability to &quot\;re-enact&quot\; past experiences\, bas
 ed on linguistic input. I will go through Chomsky&#39\;s criticism of phil
 osophical semantics\, the main philosophically-originated semantic theorie
 s (Montague&#39\;s and Davidson&#39\;s) and their accounts of competence\,
  criticism of such accounts (by Partee\, Searle\, and others)\, diverging 
 responses to such criticism: internalism (Jackendoff\, Johnson-Laird)\, no
 n-cognitive externalism (Putnam)\, cognitive externalim (Harnad\, Marconi)
 . Finally\, I will present the now widely supported simulationist paradigm
  (Gallese &amp\; Lakoff\, Barsalou\, etc.) and point out some of its diffi
 culties.
