Paradoxes have been known and discussed for centuries, dating back to classical times. They have played a crucial role in philosophical methodology, being used as tools to show that our ordinary intuitions about important philosophical concepts (truth, reference, identity, change, etc.) imply contradictions and are in need of revision. This project focuses on the role of paradoxes in the progress of philosophical knowledge. It wants to offer (i) a precise analysis of what a paradox is and what are the criteria involved in the solution of a paradox and (ii) a specific study of some of the most central paradoxes in semantics and metaphysics. It aims to contribute to the clarification of the notion of paradox and to the advancement of the search for solutions of particular paradoxes of special importance.
