When and why does this \ninflammation take place?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ub.edu\/ibub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Mitocondri-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2163\" width=\"274\" height=\"205\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ub.edu\/ibub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Mitocondri-1.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.ub.edu\/ibub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Mitocondri-1-300x224.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 274px) 100vw, 274px\" \/><figcaption> Mitochondria are the organelles that work on the energy metabolism of the cell. <\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>An article published in the journal <a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/acel.13583\"><em>Aging Cell<\/em><\/a>  reveals the inflammatory process that drives muscle atrophy is related  to the accumulation of damaged mitochondria in cells. Also, the increase  in BNIP3 levels \u2014a protein linked to the clearance of damaged  mitochondria\u2014 is related to a better muscle ageing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The study is led by the experts Antonio Zorzano, professor at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ub.edu\/portal\/web\/biologia\">Faculty of Biology<\/a>, head of the Laboratory of Complex Metabolic Diseases and Mitochondria in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irbbarcelona.org\/ca\/research\/complex-metabolic-diseases-and-mitochondria\">IRB Barcelona<\/a> and head of the research group of the Diabetes and Associated Metabolic Diseases Networking Biomedical Research Centre (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ciberdem.org\/\">CIBERDEM<\/a>), and David Sebasti\u00e1n, lecturer at the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ub.edu\/portal\/web\/farmacia\"> Faculty of Pharmacy and Food Sciences<\/a> and member of the IRB Barcelona and CIBERDEM.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The study was conducted with culture cells and mice models, as well \nas human samples from young and older people. Other collaborators in the\n study were the teams from the Institute of Biomedicine of the \nUniversity of Barcelona (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ub.edu\/ibub\/\">IBUB<\/a>), the Health Park Sant Joan de D\u00e9u and the Carlos III Health Institute, among others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ub.edu\/ibub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/mitocondri2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2164\" width=\"242\" height=\"184\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ub.edu\/ibub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/mitocondri2.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.ub.edu\/ibub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/mitocondri2-300x228.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 242px) 100vw, 242px\" \/><figcaption> The inflammatory process that drives muscle atrophy is related to the accumulation of damaged mitochondria in cells. <\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Mitochondria \u2014power plants of cells\u2014 play an essential role in \ncellular physiology. \u201cIf the BNIP3 levels of the protein are low at \nadvanced ages, more damaged mitochondria accumulate.
