2. Managing an REI in the classroom

Will I be able to do it if I've never tried before?

We encourage you to give it a try. The hardest part is, in fact, not doing what we’re used to doing: providing answers to questions. Here, the aim is to support student groups in formulating questions and searching for answers. And to intervene when we consider it necessary—sometimes to give a lecture (or two!) on a particular topic because a new tool is needed, sometimes to suggest documents or sources where useful information can be found.

There’s also the issue of control. We often like to have everything planned, to know what will happen at each moment and what we need to do or say. In this case, we’ll need to improvise more, as we’re handing over many responsibilities to the student groups—although we remain ultimately responsible for the process.

This shift in role is not trivial. The LABINQUIRY project is precisely aimed at providing infrastructures to support this change and at collaborating with teaching teams to jointly develop the tools and strategies we still need.
