There are several ways to assess the work carried out during an SRP. One option is to ask each group of students to produce a final inquiry report, possibly accompanied by an oral presentation. The report may also be written individually, or include both a shared section and an individual one. Assessment can focus on the final response to the SRP’s generative question, but also on the process followed to develop that response. Often, the final report builds on classroom journals (or logbooks) kept by students throughout the inquiry process.
Another option, closer to traditional classroom practices, is to set an individual written exam in which students are asked to explain or expand on a specific aspect or question addressed during the inquiry. This exam may be based on documents already produced, new materials provided by the teacher, or no documentation at all. This type of individual assessment can complement the grading of group reports.
Finally, a participation grade may be added to reflect both individual and collective engagement in classroom work.
