"Imaging Ramon Llull’s Words and Deeds in Thomas Le Myésier’s Breviculum"
eHumanista 63 (2025), pp. 76-99.
The aim of this project is to engage in a close examination of the Vita coaetanea o Vita magistri Raimundi by the Majorcan philosopher and theologian Ramon Llull (1232-1316) and the pictorial rendering of this text by his disciple Thomas Le Myésier in the Breviculum. My analysis underscores the intricate linkage between the act of imagining as well as the act of “imaging” Llull’s utterances materially on the manuscript’s miniatures. Additionally, the manner in which Le Myésier depicted Llull’s ideas visually on the folio can be fruitfully connected to debates about iconoclasm and the efficacy and power of images. Thus, Thomas Le Myésier, literally and figuratively, by synthesizing Llull’s Art in his compendium and rendering it more visible pictorially in the illuminations of the Breviculum, accomplished his master’s desired objective of making religious doctrine more understandable to all and propitiating the conversion of the infidels.
