We are pleased to share our recent publication in Nature Communications, where we report a novel mechanism of action for memantine, a drug currently approved for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease.
Traditionally known as a selective antagonist of NMDA receptors, memantine is now shown to also inhibit calcium-permeable AMPA receptors (CP-AMPARs)—a subtype increasingly implicated in neurological disorders such as ALS, epilepsy, and neuropathic pain. Our study combines electrophysiological recordings with high-resolution cryo-EM.
