Prof. Diego Muñoz-Torrero takes part in a CaixaResearch Health project

Prof. Diego Muñoz-Torrero is taking part in the project “Protein aggregation in the malaria parasite: what for?”. This project is led by Xavier Fernàndez-Busquets from the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC), with the participation of Zbynek Bozdech from Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. This project has received a CaixaResearch Health grant, promoted by La Caixa Foundation to provide results that benefit people’s health and well-being.

Supported by a grant of €907,923.10, the project aims to unravel the precise mechanism of action of a highly potent antimalarial drug called YAT2150. This molecule, developed by the team, binds strongly to protein aggregates in Plasmodium and appears to be difficult for the pathogen to develop resistance against. Although the exact function of these protein aggregates is not fully understood, they have been found to be crucial for the parasite’s survival.
