On November 3 and 4, 2025, the Mediators in Interorgan Crosstalk (MEDINTALK) congress was held in Valencia, with the participation of members of the NuRCaMeIn network.
This workshop has been supported by the project PROMETEO 2023 (CIPROM 22/42), Generalitat Valenciana.
The normal functioning of the metabolism in higher organisms requires the communication between multiple organs to perceive, store, sense and use energy via multiple pathways. Dysfunction of these systems may result in metabolic disease, which represents a major public-health concern. In the last years, many research groups have focused on identifying and understanding the signals that mediate interorgan crosstalk and how they control the whole-body metabolism. The study of secreted factors in the control of metabolism may allow the identification of novel therapeutic targets for treatment of human metabolic disorders.
This meeting will explore diverse aspects of interorgan communication, including the mechanisms by which hormones, lipids, small molecules, extracellular vesicles (EVs), microbiomes, among other factors, coordinate organ responses to nutritional states in ways that are sex-specific and environmental-dependent. This broad perspective challenges us to think beyond individual organs and instead integrate knowledge at the whole-body level.
