University of Barcelona

Materials Engineering

Introduction

The Bachelor’s Degree in Materials Engineering is designed to train versatile engineers with a good scientific base of knowledge and the ability to adapt to the varying demands of different industrial sectors, considering that materials, along with energy and information, are the engines of economic development.
According to the 2016 QS Rankings, the University of Barcelona is the top Spanish university in the area of materials science.
Professionals who have studied at the UB value very positively the guidance they received from their tutors in planning their academic curricula and with regard to work placements.

Superlight bicycle frames, racing car parts, components for electronic devices, satellites, or biomedical technology… All these products, with different performance-related characteristics, are largely created through the work of materials engineers.

These professionals play a key role in the manufacture of any product, as they contribute to many stages of production: design, procurement, processing, evaluation of performance in service, and recycling alternatives after useful life. Research for the improvement of materials begins in specialized laboratories, where raw materials are studied and, especially, new materials are created by modifying the chemical composition or atomic structure of existing ones. New materials and their applications are continually tested, and the results evaluated and analysed to verify that they meet the objectives set for the product for which they have been designed.

Materials engineering is, therefore, an essential profession in most manufacturing industries, providing a multidisciplinary perspective under which creative, economic, scientific and technological aspects converge.
